Exciting news for gospel music lovers! Columbia is preparing to welcome legendary gospel singer Melvin Crispell III on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. The performance will take place at the Right Direction Church International Sanctuary on Broad River Road, bringing a heartfelt message and uplifting music to the local community.
Now, if you’re not familiar with Crispell, let’s take a moment to shine a light on this remarkable artist. Crispell is not just any gospel singer; he’s a Grammy-nominated performer whose albums, like 2020’s “I’ve Got A Testimony” and 2023’s “No Failure”, have received critical acclaim and touched the hearts of many. His most popular track, “Wonderful Is Your Name,” has been streamed over 2 million times, solidifying his place in the gospel music scene.
Despite his rising stardom, Crispell chose to perform at a local church rather than a large venue, and there’s a beautiful reason behind this decision. “My foundation is singing at different churches,” he explains. “So these events mean a lot to me. And everybody needs Jesus, so it’s not just about the big stages and the big theaters. I like taking the time to go to local churches and share my story.”
An interesting aspect of Crispell’s performances is his openness to spontaneity. While he prepares a set list, he allows the Holy Spirit to guide him in the moment. “I do try to plan for what I’m going to say or what I’m going to sing,” he shares, “but the leading of the Holy Spirit is subject to change when I get in the moment.” This approach ensures that each performance remains genuine and connects deeply with the audience.
For the fans eagerly anticipating his new music, Crispell’s latest EP, “Covered Vol. 1,” is now available, featuring modern takes on classic gospel songs like “He’s Never Failed Me Yet” by CeCe Winans and “The Battle Is The Lord’s” by Yolanda Adams. With a unique style that balances lightness and passion, he offers listeners a fresh perspective while staying true to the essence of these beloved tracks. Crispell himself admits that choosing just six songs was no easy feat, joking, “It was almost impossible!” But he looks forward to exploring even more inspirations in a forthcoming volume.
When performing, Crispell emphasizes that the true audience he wishes to please is actually God. “Really, it’s an audience of one, and that’s Jesus,” he states. “The connection emotionally with the audience is about me inviting them into my personal space of worship.” This intentional invitation allows listeners to join him on a transformative spiritual journey, enriching the atmosphere of the concert.
This past year, Crispell celebrated a significant milestone in his career by winning the Traditional Gospel Album of the Year at the Dove Awards for his album “No Failure”. “That night was absolutely incredible to me,” he recalls. “I was not expecting to win, but I’m grateful to be rewarded for the hard work and dedication on this project. It means everything to me.”
With each step forward, Crispell remains committed to inspiring and uplifting through his music. “My dedication and love for music and love for God has not changed,” he asserts. “We as artists and musicians have to do our job to inspire people and connect them to Christ.” His passion for his craft and spirit is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who attend.
So mark your calendars! Melvin Crispell III takes the stage in Columbia on November 6 at 7 p.m. as part of the church’s four-day Direction Conference. This event promises an evening of soul-soothing melodies and an authentic experience of worship.
