Snow is on the Way: Midlands Schools Prepare for Weather Woes

As winter rears its chilly head, schools across the Midlands are getting ready to navigate the expected snowfall this week. Parents and students should take note as educational institutions announce closures and delays to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Early Dismissals on Tuesday, January 21

It’s a case of an early exit on Tuesday, January 21, with many schools opting for an early dismissal schedule. If you have children, grab a pen and take note of the early dismissal times at Kershaw County schools:

  • Elementary schools will let out at 11:30 a.m.
  • Middle schools will follow at 11:45 a.m.
  • High schools will close their doors at noon.

Students in half-day preschool special needs programs will not attend school on Tuesday, and while it might not be a regular school day, breakfast and lunch will still be served in Kershaw County.

On to Wednesday: E-Learning Days

Things will shift dramatically on Wednesday, January 22, as many districts transition to e-Learning days. Kershaw County students will see start times pushed back by two hours on Wednesday, giving everyone some extra snooze time in the morning. That means parents, you might get to enjoy that second cup of coffee!

Extracurricular and after-school activities, including sports practices and games, will be canceled on Tuesday across all districts to prioritize safety amid potentially dangerous driving conditions.

What to Expect in Different Districts

Here’s a breakdown of how various schools in the Midlands plan to handle the next couple of days:

  • Kershaw County: Early dismissal on Tuesday with a two-hour delay on Wednesday. E-Learning assignments will be accessed online, mostly through Google Classroom.
  • Lexington School District Three: Similar early dismissal plan on Tuesday, with e-Learning scheduled for Wednesday. Dismissal times include B-L Primary at 10:30 a.m. and B-L High at 11:30 a.m..
  • Lexington School District Four: Early dismissals will occur at 10:30 a.m. for all intermediate schools and 11:55 a.m. for all high schools. A close watch is being kept on weather developments for Wednesday’s plans.
  • Newberry County: Dismissal times vary: Elementary schools round up at 12:15 p.m. while Newberry High lets out at 1:00 p.m.. On Wednesday, these schools will also operate on a two-hour delay.

During these freezing cold days, it’s advised that students dress in warm layers, especially with wind chills expected to dip between 10 and 15 degrees. Staying warm is vital as everyone braces for the snowy challenges ahead!

Keep an Eye on the Updates

In light of the weather conditions, the Fairfield County Board of Trustees has scheduled a meeting at 6:00 PM on Tuesday to discuss any necessary adjustments. Parents and students alike should stay tuned for any updates from their respective schools in case of further changes.

As we all hunker down for what could be a winter wonderland or a snowy obstacle course, let’s take a moment to appreciate the efforts of school districts in prioritizing student safety while navigating the unpredictable weather. Don’t forget, stay warm, stay safe, and prepare for a few cozy days indoors doing schoolwork and sipping hot chocolate!
