Columbia Honors Heroes at Mission BBQ on 9/11
Columbia, SC – On a cloudy day that threatened a sprinkle with a slight chance of rain, the Mission BBQ restaurant at 275 Harbison Boulevard came alive with gratitude and remembrance on September 11, 2024. With temperatures hovering around 80°F and a gentle breeze from the east-northeast, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, just like the food being served inside.
A Day of Tribute
This day marked an annual event that Mission BBQ has celebrated since it opened its doors on September 11, 2011. Co-founders who are deeply passionate about barbecue and dedicated to honoring the heroic sacrifices made by first responders created the restaurant. Each year, on this tragic anniversary, Mission BBQ hosts a special event to pay tribute to those who served and those who lost their lives during the September 11 attacks.
A Heartfelt Ceremony
As attendees gathered, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department‘s very own Kaaren Miller beautifully sang the National Anthem, setting a solemn yet uplifting tone for the ceremony. The gathering was attended by local heroes, including representatives from the Irmo Fire, Irmo Police, Columbia Police, Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Lexington County EMS.
During the event, the atmosphere was filled with respect and camaraderie, as a local retired SCDNR officer, JB Barker, was honored for his nearly three decades of service. “It is because of these heroes that we gather today, all of you, so that we may never forget and always remember,” said Thayer Sheets, the Mission BBQ Area Director. “For this, we humbly thank you for all that you do every single day.”
A Gesture of Appreciation
As a special thank you, any first responders who visited Mission BBQ on September 11 received a free sandwich. It was a small but meaningful gesture to show appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
Giving Back to the Community
Mission BBQ’s commitment to honoring heroes extends beyond just one day a year. The Columbia location contributes to several local organizations, such as the SC State Firefighters Association, SC Law Enforcement Association, and more. Attendees at the event also had the opportunity to browse through a table of hats for sale to support the Muller Memorial Foundation, underscoring the restaurant’s dedication to giving back to the community.
The warm and inviting atmosphere at Mission BBQ, where friends and families can enjoy delicious food while celebrating the spirit of community support, is part of what makes this restaurant so special. It’s not just about great barbecue, but also about forging connections and strengthening bonds during moments of remembrance and gratitude.
