In an unfortunate turn of events, a man was fatally struck by a motorized two-wheeler on Kyzer Road in Lexington, South Carolina. The calamity occurred as the man was returning to his residence after collecting his mail.
The 63-year-old Lexington resident, named Kevin Scott Collins, was crossing the street at the 200 block of Kyzer Road when he was hit by a speeding motorcycle. The crash also claimed the life of the 17-year-old motorcyclist, identified as James Leonard Ely III, also a Lexington resident. The disturbing event took place around 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Ely was heading west on Kyzer Road on his motorbike when he collided with Collins. The report suggests that Ely had a passenger accompanying him on the motorcycle who survived the crash and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for the treatment of minor injuries. Ely was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. Both Ely and Collins were declared dead at the site of the accident.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) has taken up the task of investigating this tragic incident. Upon completion of the preliminary investigation, more details related to factors contributing to the accident, such as speed, distraction, or any other potential causes, will be released. In South Carolina, teenagers aged 15 and above are eligible to obtain a beginner’s motorcycle license.
This unfortunate event signifies the importance of road safety measures and the potential dangers posed by motorcycling, both for riders and pedestrians. It prompts a serious discussion about teaching young riders the importance of safe motorcycling habits and cultivating a respect for traffic regulations.
