High School Senior and Retired Fireman Meet Tragic End in Motorcycle Collision

Lexington, South Carolina – A horrific crash last night claimed the lives of two longtime community members, a White Knoll High School senior, 17-year-old James Leonard Ely III, and retired Lexington County fireman, 63-year-old Kevin Scott Collins.

Ely was driving a motorcycle that collided with Collins at approximately 10 PM on Kyzer Road, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. Collins was on foot, crossing the road after checking his mailbox when the accident occurred. Both Ely and Collins were pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger on the motorcycle riding with Ely received minor injuries and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are currently investigating the incident.

Community in Mourning

The loss of these two individuals has sent waves of grief throughout the community. Lexington School District One, where James Ely III was a senior, issued a statement expressing their sadness.

“School and district leaders are focusing on supporting James’s family and the WKH students and employees. A loss and grief crisis response team of school counselors and school psychologists was on campus today….”

These resources provided by the district, including a partnership with mental health support service Care Solace, aim to provide the necessary support to students and their families during this difficult time.

Neighbors React

Neighbors of the two victims were shocked and saddened. Kenny Miles, a neighbor of Collins, expressed disbelief at the circumstances of his friend’s death. “By God, a grown person going to check his mail that’s all he was doing”, Miles reflected.

Chris Harrington, another local resident, echoed Miles’ grief. “I mean its unfortunate, they both had to end in such a tragic way. A 17-year-old…that should not happen to him, nor should it happen to a gentleman in his retirement, its sad either way.”

We join the community of Lexington in mourning these sudden and tragic losses, and our thoughts are with Ely’s passenger, wishing them a swift recovery.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation carries on, the community is pulling together to support each other and remember the lives of their neighbors. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance, to protect ourselves and each other.
