In a move that surely brings a sigh of relief to many, Columbia, S.C. is gearing up for some significant upgrades to its water infrastructure, particularly for those living along North Trenholm Road. Get ready to say goodbye to low water pressure and hello to refreshing, quality water! A whopping $19 million project has just been green-lit by the city, targeting those pesky old water mains that have been notorious for leaks and breaks.
Columbia’s Assistant City Manager, Clint Shealy, enthusiastically shared the good news: “Increased flow, pressure, better water quality is gonna be really good for you.” If you’ve experienced low pressure while trying to take a shower or fill up your kettle, you’ll know just how welcome this news is! This upgrade promises to replace outdated systems with larger and more durable pipes, and the benefits will extend far beyond just one neighborhood.
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is how it will improve the entire network. Shealy explained, “It allows us a larger conduit to bring water from the Lake Murray Water Treatment Plant,” serving not just North Trenholm Road but crucial areas including downtown and parts of the southeastern region. And if you’re near Fort Jackson, this project is particularly important, as it ensures a secondary supply of water.
The upgrade will take place in two phases. The north phase will cover the stretch from Decker Boulevard to Rockbridge Road, while the south phase extends from Rockbridge Road to Forest Drive. Here’s the kicker: both phases will be moving ahead at the same time! The city is employing two contractors to help speed up the process, which is music to the ears of residents eager for improved service.
Timing is everything, and the city is keen to coincide these upgrades with the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s (SCDOT) plans to repave North Trenholm Road. Shealy pointed out the importance of doing the water work first, saying, “The last thing we want to do is have old infrastructure and fresh pavement on top of it.” This proactive approach means that if a water line happens to break after the paving, they won’t have to tear up newly done roads—a task no one enjoys!
Mark your calendars! Construction is anticipated to get underway shortly after the New Year. While the work may bring some temporary inconveniences, the success of this infrastructure upgrade is expected to come to fruition by early 2026. Columbia residents can look forward to flowing through life with better water quality and pressure as the city invests in its future.
This is an exciting time for Columbia’s water system, and improvements are just around the corner! As we phase into the New Year, customers along North Trenholm Road can anticipate a more reliable water supply and better services overall. So, hang in there for just a bit longer—big changes are coming your way!
