O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe Announces Temporary Closure in Downtown Lexington

O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe Closes Its Doors in Downtown Lexington

Lexington is buzzing with a mixture of surprise and sadness as news spreads about the temporary closure of O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe. Located at 121 E. Main St., this cozy bakery has been a beloved staple in the area for the last five years, serving up delightful baked goods, delicious coffee, and all sorts of treats that brought comfort to many.

Closure Announcement

On a recent Sunday afternoon, owner Matt O’Hara shared the news on Facebook that the cafe would be closing its doors, at least for a while. His message read, “Announcing the immediate (hopefully temporary) closure of the O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe. We are not giving up on the space or the prospect of finding a model that might work here…” He elaborated that they are currently exploring various options to see how they can keep some form of hospitality alive in the space.

A Change in Path

Over the years, O’Hara’s has made quite a name for itself, earning a spot on The State’s list of essential restaurants in the Midlands. In its most recent phase, the cafe transitioned to a counter service model highlighting a variety of bagels. Although this shift seems promising, it ultimately wasn’t enough to sustain operations under the current structure.

“We will keep you posted here when any further decisions are made,” O’Hara mentioned in his post. His words reflect a glimmer of hope as he and his team look to find a viable way forward. He also expressed immense gratitude, saying, “Thanks to all who have been a part of this place over these past 5 years.”

Community Reaction

The reaction to this announcement has been quite overwhelming. As of Monday morning, the Facebook post has attracted more than 600 reactions and over 500 comments. It’s clear that the Lexington community is holding the café close to its heart, with many sharing fond memories of their visits to the bakery.

A Heartfelt Goodbye, Not a Final One

While O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe may be taking a break, it’s worth noting that O’Hara is still very much a part of the local food scene. His other establishment, O’Hara’s Public House, an Irish pub just a few doors down at 131 E. Main St., remains open and continues to serve its patrons. Time will tell if the bakery will eventually resurface in a new form, and until then, beer lovers can enjoy some good food and drinks at his pub down the road.

Downtown Lexington’s Vibrant Scene

O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe is just one of the many gems that contribute to the vibrant dining scene in downtown Lexington. Restaurants like Keg Cowboy, Bodhi Thai Dining, Groucho’s Deli, Barrio, Craft Axe Throwing, Cribb’s, Bubba’s Biscuit, Libby’s, and Nicky’s Pizzeria make this area a foodie’s paradise. Not to mention the scenic Icehouse Amphitheater that plays host to various events throughout the year, and the recently opened TakoSushi restaurant at the corner of Main and Church streets.

Looking Ahead

As O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe shifts its focus towards finding a new model that works, Lexington is left holding its breath, hoping for a brighter return. This city has shown resilience and an unwavering love for its local businesses, and O’Hara’s will continue to be a part of that story, hopefully opening its doors again when the time is right. Until then, the bakery will be missed, but its spirit will remain a part of Lexington’s dining landscape.
