Irmo Prepares for Spectacular 50th Annual Okra Strut Festival with Music, Parade, and Local Talent

Irmo Gears Up for the 50th Annual Okra Strut Festival

It’s that time of year again, folks! Irmo is buzzing with excitement as the 50th Annual Okra Strut Festival is just around the corner. Set to take place at Moore Park, located at 7473 Church St., the festival will run on Friday, September 27, and Saturday, September 28. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just visiting, there’s something special waiting for everyone.

A Brief History of the Okra Strut

Can you believe it has been fifty glorious years since the very first Okra Strut? Back in 1973, the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club kicked off a small arts and crafts fair to raise funds for a new library in Irmo, and look at how far we’ve come! The festival has transformed into a major event that attracts around 25,000 attendees every year. Now, that’s a celebration!

What to Expect This Year

This year’s festivities promise to be bigger and better than ever. The fun will kick off on Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m. with the electrifying sounds of Simply Shania, a Shania Twain tribute band. And if that’s not enough, stick around for Cowboy Mouth taking the stage at the Prisma Health Amphitheater. Grab your friends, bring your dancing shoes, and get ready for a night of fantastic music!

The Parade and Saturday Activities

Saturday morning kicks off bright and early with the annual Irmo Okra Strut Parade at 9 a.m.. Starting at CrossRoads Intermediate, the parade will make its way down Saint Andrews Rd. and continue onto Lake Murray Blvd. Make sure you arrive early, as Saint Andrews Rd. will close to traffic at 8:45 a.m. It’s going to be a lively sight with floats, bands, and plenty of spirited community participation.

But that’s just the beginning! Saturday is packed with activities, including arts and crafts vendors, amusement rides, and oh-so-delicious food stands to tickle your taste buds. And don’t forget the local talent show starting at 6 p.m., featuring the winner of this year’s Irmo Battle of the Bands, Say Femme, followed by the incredible tribute band, Absolute Queen. It’s bound to be an entertaining evening!

Weather Considerations

Now, here’s something to keep in mind: the forecast for the weekend shows a high of 76°F with a 100% chance of rain, so you might want to grab an umbrella before heading out. Expect winds from the southeast at about 5 to 10 mph on Friday, switching to stronger winds later in the evening and into Saturday. And yes, the weather will get a bit wild with thunderstorms likely. Good news, though—this event is rain-or-shine! Just keep in mind that the start times for bands may adjust a little due to the weather.

Wrapping Up

The 50th Annual Irmo Okra Strut is indeed a milestone worth celebrating. Come out with your friends and family to enjoy everything that this wonderful festival has to offer. From arts and crafts to live music, delicious food, and a delightful community spirit, you won’t want to miss it!

For more information and updates as the festival approaches, keep an eye out on social media or the event’s official page. Let’s make some unforgettable memories this weekend in Irmo!
