Oktoberfest: A Celebratory Fusion of German Culture in Columbia, South Carolina

Oktoberfest Brings a Taste of Germany to Columbia, South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — It’s that time of the year again! The annual German celebration, Oktoberfest, is back and buzzing in the South Carolina Midlands. This weekend, the atmosphere was electric as folks from all walks of life gathered at the cozy Incarnation Lutheran Church to soak in the vibrant blend of German food, music, and culture. It was a sight to behold, with hundreds attending, and many newcomers experiencing it for the first time.

New Friends and Old Memories

Among the excited faces were sisters Renee and Darlene Coleman, who recently moved to the area. “I told my sister we should check it out,” Renee shared, beaming with enthusiasm. “We love exploring different events to learn about various cultures. Plus, trying out new foods is always fun!” The joy of fellowship was evident in the air, as the sisters savored every moment of their cultural adventure.

Friendship was a theme shared by many, including lifelong besties Suzanne Papp and Brandi Williams. After what felt like ages, they finally found a Saturday both had free. “We just had to come together this year!” Papp exclaimed. “I’m really looking forward to dancing and brushing up on some German dances,” Williams added with a sparkle in her eye. It’s wonderful how these events rekindle past connections and create new memories.

Dance, Dance, Dance!

The celebration was filled with spirited energy as visitors experienced the thrill of Polka dances. Dancer **Zanna Mills** mentioned how she had rehearsed for weeks leading up to the performance. “We do a lot of practice beforehand,” she explained. “It’s definitely a lot of work, but seeing my mom cheering under the tent gives me extra motivation!” The cheerful cheers and laughter from onlookers created a warm and inviting atmosphere that made everyone feel right at home.

A Taste of Germany Closer to Home

Some attendees had their own special reasons for coming out. Uriel Rengel, who recently visited Munich, found himself reminiscing about the vibrant vibe in Germany. “I was in Munich earlier this year, and when I spotted an ad for Oktoberfest in Columbia, it brought back those cherished memories of beer halls and lively celebrations,” he said. “I figured, why not immerse myself in something like that again, but closer to home?”

Rengel also noticed that many newcomers to the festival commented on how it was their first time attending. “It’s heartwarming to hear them say, ‘I’m going to make this a yearly trip now,’” he shared. The event not only introduces people to German culture but also fosters a sense of community and shared enjoyment, which is something everyone can appreciate.

Mark Your Calendars!

If you haven’t made your way to the event yet, there’s still time! The last day of Oktoberfest is Sunday, October 13, and it runs from noon to 6 p.m. Buzzing excitement and delightful experiences await all who come by!

As the event continues, it’s clear that Oktoberfest is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of community, culture, and cherished connections. Whether you’re new to the area or a long-time resident, there’s something magical about gathering together to share in the joy of food, dance, and culture. You won’t want to miss out on such a spirited celebration!
