Lexington, SC, is buzzing with excitement as the community prepares for a special event that’s been almost a decade in the making! Mark your calendars for Friday, March 13, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. when the Town will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the Old Mill Pond Trail. This event promises to be a wonderful gathering, with a chance to enjoy the great outdoors right in the heart of our beloved town.
The Old Mill Pond Trail features a scenic 1.15-mile paved loop that gracefully winds around the stunning Lexington Mill Pond. As visitors walk, they’ll come across charming bridges, inviting outlooks, and cozy seating areas where they can pause to take in the beautiful nature surrounding them. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the splendor of our local environment!
Many of us might not know that this project dates back to the Town’s 2012 Vision Plan, which aimed to create a walking trail around the pond. Unfortunately, the journey has had its ups and downs, especially following the devastating historic flooding in 2015, which led to the breach of several local dams—including the Old Mill’s earthen dam. This left the pond empty for nearly nine years, leaving the community longing for the vibrant space it once was.
Thanks to a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, the dream of reestablishing this beautiful outdoor space has finally come to fruition. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be attended by Mayor Hazel Livingston and members of the Town Council, showcasing the dedication and hard work that went into making this project possible.
This is an excellent opportunity for residents in Lexington and the surrounding areas—including West Columbia, Springdale, South Congaree, Pine Ridge, and beyond—to come together in celebration. Everyone is welcome, and it’s a great chance to meet neighbors and rekindle community connections.
Once the ribbon cutting is complete, you won’t have to wait any longer to explore the trail. It will be open for the public to enjoy immediately after the ceremony. Grab your walking shoes, a friend or family member, and take the first steps on this lovely new path! Whether you’re looking to enjoy a peaceful walk, take in the sights, or just relax by the water, the Old Mill Pond Trail is sure to offer a little something for everyone.
The festivities will take place at 711 East Main Street, Lexington, SC. Make sure to arrive early to grab a good parking spot and soak in the atmosphere leading up to the ceremony.
Let your friends and family know about this exciting event! It’s not only a celebration of new beginnings but is also a testament to what can be achieved when the community comes together. Social media, word of mouth, and even that neighbor you haven’t seen in a while are perfect avenues to spread the news. Let’s make the first day of the Old Mill Pond Trail an unforgettable one!
We can’t wait to see you in Lexington on March 13. Together, let’s enjoy a new chapter in our community’s story, surrounded by nature’s beauty!
