Lexington is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for the grand opening of the Old Mill Pond Trail, a delightful new addition that promises to enhance our lovely town. On Friday, September 13, at 10:30 a.m., residents and visitors alike are invited to join the celebration at 711 East Main Street. The event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Hazel Livingston and the town council members present. It’s a great way to show support for a project that’s taken years to come to fruition!
The Old Mill Pond Trail is a lovely 1.15-mile paved loop that beautifully wraps around the Lexington Mill Pond. Picture this: walking along a serene path dotted with bridges and outlooks, where you can pause to soak in the scenic views. There are also seating areas along the way, perfect for those who just want to sit back and enjoy the sounds of nature. Whether you’re an avid jogger, a leisurely walker, or looking for a calm space for reflection, this trail is designed to be enjoyed by everyone.
The journey to building this beautiful trail hasn’t been smooth sailing, though. Back in 2012, as part of the Town’s Vision Plan, the idea for a walking trail was hatched. However, fate had other plans when the devastating 2015 flood hit, which caused significant damage, including the breach of several local dams, one of which was the earthen dam of the Old Mill. This left the pond empty for an extended nine years, putting a pause on the trail plans.
But, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated public/private partnership, the vision is finally coming alive! Now, the Old Mill Pond is not only back in action but is also surrounded by this inviting trail. It’s truly a testament to the community’s resilience and teamwork!
Residents are encouraged to come out and support this new addition to our community. It’s more than just a trail; it’s a celebration of what Lexington stands for—community, endurance, and the beauty of nature. Plus, who wouldn’t want to enjoy the gorgeous weather? The forecast shows a high of 82°F with gentle winds coming from the east-northeast. It sounds like the perfect day for a stroll!
So grab your walking shoes, bring the family, and enjoy a morning filled with fun and festivities. You’ll have the chance to mingle with friends and neighbors, hear from the mayor and other officials, and perhaps even take the first official steps on the new trail.
The opening of the Old Mill Pond Trail marks an exciting chapter in the ongoing development of Lexington. As the town blossoms with new opportunities for outdoor recreation and community gathering, it’s worth keeping an eye on what’s next! The positive impact this trail will have on residents’ physical and mental well-being cannot be underestimated. So whether you’re looking to get fit, spend time with family, or just enjoy some peace and quiet, this trail promises it all.
Everyone is welcome to join the fun on September 13th, so mark your calendars! Let’s all come together to celebrate this wonderful new space, a true gem in the heart of Lexington.
