The city is considering increasing on-street parking rates from 75 cents to $2 per hour. This rate hike, the first since parking meters were introduced about 25 years ago, aims to meet the growing demands of our bustling downtown.

Why the Increase?

Columbia’s City Manager, Teresa Wilson, has been very open about the need for this adjustment. “To be honest and just blunt, since the establishment of paid parking in Columbia… there’s never been an adjustment of rates,” she stated. With the current pricing, it’s estimated that the city would only rake in about $261,000 over the next five years. However, if the rate change gets approved, that amount could soar to a whopping $17 million in the same time frame. Quite a difference!

What’s the city planning to do with all that extra revenue? According to Wilson, the funds would be crucial for various infrastructure improvements. This includes maintaining and repairing the 14 surface lots and 11 parking decks that currently need attention. “It’s no longer adequate for what our citizens, customers, and visitors deserve,” she added. The goal is to create a better experience for everyone who wants to enjoy what downtown Columbia has to offer.

What Do Residents Think?

As with any proposed change, there are mixed feelings from the public. Alyssa Trussell, who works in the downtown area, mentioned, “It’s a push and pull because you want them to better the city, so I agree with it to an extent.” Trussell’s sentiment seems to echo what many feel: a desire for improvement, even if it comes with a higher price tag for parking.

Another downtown worker, Chance Kitchens, also echoed this idea. “If it goes back towards the city and makes it more beautiful, we’re definitely for that,” he said. “We want to create a very nice environment for people and a safe environment for people to come downtown to be able to park.” It’s clear that while some might be wary about the increase, many residents recognize the potential benefits for improving the overall city experience.

Other Changes on the Table

In addition to the parking rate hike, the city is exploring some adjustments to parking enforcement hours. The aim is to bring more consistency across the city, enhancing the overall parking experience. However, it’s worth noting that there are no proposed changes to the current enforcement hours in residential areas, so residents can breathe a bit easier with that news!
