A Midlands resident lost his life in a tragic accident over the weekend when he was struck by a car that veered off the road, reports the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. Steven Ezell Christopher, a 51-year-old resident of Lexington, was the victim of the incident, as confirmed by Coroner Margaret Fisher.
The fatal collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday on Old Cherokee Road near the intersection with Maxie Road in the Lexington area close to Lake Murray, stated Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Christopher was walking east along the 800 block of Old Cherokee Road when a 2020 Kia Forte traveling in the same direction ran off the right side of the road, striking the pedestrian.
Tragically, Christopher succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Kia initially fled the scene but returned the next morning to report the accident to authorities, according to Fisher. No information has been released regarding whether the driver will face criminal charges.
Another individual was in the Kia as a passenger at the time of the crash, but no injuries were reported for either occupant. The exact cause of the vehicle veering off the road is currently under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.
