With an investigation underway, local residents are coming together to support the grieving family in their time of need.

Pelion Community in Mourning After Tragic House Fire

The small town of Pelion, located in Lexington County, is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of a young life in a devastating house fire. The victim, identified as Remede Aveah Pridgen, was only two years old and lived in Gaston, S.C. The tragic incident occurred in the early morning hours of March 15, 2025, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit community.

The Fire Details

Emergency services received an alarm at about 2:12 a.m. regarding a residential structure fire believed to involve potential entrapment. Firefighters from the Lexington County Fire Service arrived on the scene shortly thereafter to discover the mobile home fully engulfed in flames. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated as first responders battled not only the flames but also the urgency of attempting to save those trapped inside.

Meanwhile, family members of the child were desperate to reach little Remede, but the intensity of the fire made it impossible. In a frantic attempt to escape, they kicked out a window air conditioner, managing to get out, but tragically, they could not bring the toddler to safety. Firefighters were informed that Remede was still in the house, but all efforts to rescue her were unfortunately unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Underway

As the community grapples with its loss, authorities have begun investigating the cause of the fire. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department are both actively looking into what sparked the blaze. Additionally, the SLED Arson and Special Victims Unit has been brought in to assist in this serious investigation.

Support for the Family

In the aftermath of the fire, neighbors have rallied around the grieving family, leaving bouquets of flowers and stuffed animals outside the charred home as a symbol of support and love. The homeowner, Marty Miles, revealed that his daughter and two other residents of the mobile home lost all their possessions in the fire, an additional burden during this already overwhelming time. Thankfully, he has insurance on the property, but the family is still seeking immediate assistance.

To help the family recover from this tragic event, they are reaching out to the American Red Cross for support to replace their basic necessities. The community often comes together in times of need, and residents are likely to step up during this heartbreaking episode.

Community Reflection

The loss of little Remede Aveah Pridgen has left a void in Pelion that will not soon be filled. Residents are reminded of the fragility of life and the unforeseen challenges families can face. During this time, everyone is encouraged to cherish their loved ones a little more and to lend a helping hand where possible.

As the investigation continues, the story serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, prompting an outpouring of support, compassion, and solidarity among the people of Pelion.
