Man Indicted After Shooting Police K-9 in South Carolina
Prosperity, S.C. — A South Carolina man is facing serious federal charges after allegedly shooting and killing a police dog earlier this summer. The incident involves James Robert Peterson, a 37-year-old resident of Newberry County, who is now under federal indictment for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
What Happened
The events leading to the charges began on June 11, 2023, when law enforcement officials attempted to serve a burglary warrant at Peterson’s mother’s home. During the operation, a police K-9 named Coba, a Belgian Malinois mix, identified Peterson inside the house. Peterson is accused of shooting at the dog, as well as firing at law enforcement officials. In response, the officers returned fire, hitting him.
