Concord Says Goodbye to Beloved Family Man and Navy Veteran Fred Wayne Pinion, Sr.

Concord, NC – The community of Concord has lost a treasured soul with the passing of Fred Wayne Pinion, Sr. on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the age of 92. Fred spent his final moments at Hospice Tucker House, surrounded by warmth and love from family members who cherished him deeply.

Remembering a Life Filled with Service and Love

Born on November 16, 1932, to James Claude Pinion and Lurier Jordan Pinion in Salisbury, NC, Fred had a heart that radiated warmth and kindness. Many friends and family members will fondly remember him not only as a dedicated husband and father but also as a heroic figure who served in the United States Navy. Fred took to the seas as a Hospital Corpsman Second Class aboard the USS Boxer (CV-21) during the Korean War, where he diligently cared for fellow sailors and made lifelong memories.

One of Fred’s remarkable traits was his love for storytelling. He enjoyed sharing tales of his military service, often captivating anyone willing to listen. Those narratives brought laughter and a sense of pride to his family and friends.

A Loving Family Man

Fred’s legacy continues through his beloved family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Harriet Pinion, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Together, they created a family filled with love, laughter, and precious memories. Fred and Harriet had three wonderful sons: Chuck Pinion and his partner Tina from Lexington, SC, David Pinion and his spouse Lea from Cumming, GA, and Fred Pinion, Jr. and his wife Jennifer from Greenville, SC. Their family also includes two shining daughters: Deena Hill from Concord, NC, and Wendy Lucas, joined by her spouse John, also from Concord.

Fred was a doting grandfather to 12 grandchildren, who all adored their grandfather. They ranged from Bradley Pinion and Kristen to Matthew Lucas, each carrying a piece of Fred’s joy and passion. The family tree extends further with 11 great-grandchildren, ensuring that Fred’s love and spirit will carry on for generations to come.

A Passion for Golf and Community

Outside of family ties, Fred had a passion for the game of golf. He was an avid golfer, enjoying countless rounds with friends and passing down the appreciation of the game to his children and grandchildren. His love for golf resonated with his outlook on life, engaging in the sport with excitement and determination.

Fred’s career in the field of fiberglass began at Burlington Mills before he spent over 25 years at Hexcel Schwebel Fiberglass in Anderson, SC. After retiring at 72, Fred remained active as a consultant with Bedford Weaving in Virginia, forming a tight bond with his boss, a testament to his amiable nature.

Farewell and Final Respects

As the Pinion family prepares for a private burial at Carolina Memorial Park on Friday, March 21, 2025, they will remember Fred for the love and joy he brought into their lives. Friends and family are invited to gather at the home of Harriet Pinion during this profound time of reflection and remembrance.
