Remembering a Heart of Gold: John Ross Robinson

We gather today to pay tribute to a remarkable individual from Columbia, South Carolina. John Ross Robinson, a kindhearted advocate for those with special needs, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, after a lengthy battle with neuropathy that spanned 15 years. His absence leaves a significant void in our community.

A Life of Service and Compassion

Born on October 30, 1950, Ross was a proud graduate of Dreher High School before pursuing his studies at the University of South Carolina. Here, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He also dedicated four years of his life to serving in the South Carolina National Guard, exemplifying responsibility and honor in all he undertook.

For nearly 40 years, Ross devoted himself to providing services and care for children and adults with special needs. Known for his unabashed kindness and deep passion for helping the vulnerable, he touched countless lives with his unwavering support. His efforts were nothing short of inspirational—truly embodying a spirit of compassion that we can all aspire to.

Passions and Hobbies

In his younger years, Ross was quite the athlete, participating in activities like basketball and softball. He even attempted to coach a girls’ softball team, lovingly dubbed the Pioneer Fence. Stories from those coaching days still circulate among the community, a testament to his ability to foster joy and camaraderie.

When it came to hobbies, golf had Ross under its spell. He cherished each moment on the course until his battle with neuropathy made it a challenge. Even when faced with difficulties, his love for the game shone brightly through in the way he discussed it with family and friends.

A True Gamecock Fan

As a dedicated fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Ross celebrated their victories with an enthusiasm that was as infectious as his laughter. No one could match the way he radiated joy while watching games, filled with pride for his team and community.

Moments to Treasure

When it came to spending time with family, nothing compared to the magical sunsets he enjoyed at Lake Murray with his beloved mother-in-law, Claudine Hope. These peaceful moments will forever be etched in the hearts of those who shared them, demonstrating Ross’s appreciation for the simple pleasures in life.

Family First

Ross’s greatest pride was undoubtedly his son, Elliott, affectionately known as “Big E.” From T-ball to high school sports, Ross was the ultimate cheerleader, supporting Elliott at every game and sharing in every success. His contribution was so impactful that his basketball jersey number was ultimately retired, marking a significant milestone in Elliott’s athletic journey.

Ross leaves behind an incredible legacy, survived by his ex-wife and best friend, Gail Hope Robinson; his cherished son, Elliott Robinson; and many loving relatives including brothers, a nephew, niece, and great nieces and nephews. His memory will undoubtedly live on through those who loved him so dearly.

Celebration of Life Planned

A Celebration of Life to honor Ross is planned for later this year, and details will be shared with the community as we come together to celebrate this extraordinary man. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy, a cause close to Ross’s heart.

For those who wish to honor Ross in a more personal way, feel free to plant a tree, a beautiful gesture that extends his spirit into nature. The Barr-Price Funeral Home in Lexington is assisting the family with all arrangements, ensuring that they receive the utmost comfort during this difficult time.

John Ross Robinson may no longer be with us, but his spirit of kindness and compassion lives on in our hearts and in the memories we cherish. Let us remember him not in sorrow, but in gratitude for the love and joy he brought into our lives.
