Remembering Virginia “Gina” McCuen: A Legacy of Love and Leadership in Columbia

Columbia, SC – The community is coming together to remember Virginia A. McCuen, affectionately known as “Gina,” who passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at the age of 81. Gina’s family surrounded her with love as she bravely faced complications from Multiple Sclerosis. A memorial service will be held in her honor on September 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Lexington, followed by a visitation, allowing friends and family to remember the profound impact she had on so many lives.

A True Inspiration

Gina was not just a beloved mother, sister, and friend; she was a true inspiration to everyone who knew her. As a female business owner, a community activist, and a relentless fighter in her battle against MS, she exemplified strength and resilience. Throughout her life, she set high expectations—not just for herself, but for everyone around her, always motivating others to strive for greatness.

Business Success in the Heart of Lexington

In 1982, Gina opened the Lexington franchise of Snelling and Snelling, which remains under the guidance of her daughter, Elizabeth Smith Trenbeath. Her business achievements were remarkable, with Gina consistently ranking among the top 100 out of 300 Snelling offices nationwide. She successfully placed over 1,700 individuals in various positions, bringing in a staggering cumulative salary of more than $28 million.

Even in the face of adversity, such as when she constructed an 8,000-square-foot business complex called Victoria Square in downtown Lexington, she proved the doubters wrong—who had claimed “nothing is happening in Lexington.” Her dedication to her work was recognized with numerous accolades, including being named Regional Manager of the Year and earning the Million Dollar Club honor, awarded to only 55 recruiters nationwide by 1998.

A Life Dedicated to Serving Others

Gina’s journey began at the University of Georgia, where she worked as a career counselor before moving to Columbia in 1968. She dedicated her skills to numerous community projects, such as serving as a coordinator for the Children in Placement Project and contributing to Columbia College’s student services. Her commitment to helping others was evident in everything she did.

Throughout the years, Gina held various leadership roles, including being the first woman president of the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club and a longstanding member of the League of Women Voters. She also received many honors, such as the prestigious Columbia Woman of the Year award in 1973. Her dedication to volunteer work garnered her recognition with multiple awards, showcasing her commitment to community service.

Her Legacy Will Live On

Among her many accolades, Gina was a cherished member of both Lexington United Methodist Church and St. Stephens Lutheran Church, exhibiting her deep faith which always resonated in her actions. She was a founding member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority during her college years, later serving as a lifelong member and contributing significantly to the sorority’s legacy.

After a rich life filled with achievements and kindness, Gina is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth and Virginia “Ginger,” along with several grandchildren and step-family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam McCuen, and an elder sister.

Remembering Gina

Gina McCuen’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her community. To honor her memory, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephens Lutheran Church or the South Carolina Ballet. As the community gathers to celebrate Gina’s life, her spirit will undoubtedly continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know her.
