Riverbanks Zoo & Garden Unveils Unique Wild Lights Show for the Holiday Season

Riverbanks Zoo & Garden Lights Up the Holidays with Wild Lights Show

As the holiday season approaches, the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia, S.C. is getting ready to celebrate with its annual Wild Lights Show. It’s a festive time for families looking for engaging holiday activities, but Riverbanks promises to deliver something a bit out of the ordinary. Instead of the typical holiday displays, this year’s light show aims to brighten the season while also raising awareness about wildlife conservation.

More Animal Claws, Less Santa Claus

With over 60 unique lantern displays illuminating the zoo, the event focuses on sparking joy while reminding visitors of the importance of protecting our planet’s endangered species. “I like to say, a little less Santa Claus and a little more animal claws,” explained Matt Perron, the zoo’s spokesperson. The message is clear: this initiative goes beyond just merriment; it’s a fun, engaging way to highlight wildlife conservation efforts.

A New Tradition

This is only the second year for the Wild Lights extravaganza, but Riverbanks Zoo has a long-standing tradition of hosting holiday events. In previous years, attendees enjoyed the “Lights over Riverbanks” experience, which has now transformed into this new, conservation-minded approach. “It brings a beautiful juxtaposition of the holiday spirit and nature,” Perron added.

Zoo visitors typically associate these attractions with simply observing animals, but the Riverbanks team emphasizes that they are deeply involved in breeding endangered species and ensuring future generations have the opportunity to see these magnificent animals in person.

Exciting Changes Await!

For guests returning from last year, get excited! Every single lantern display introduced this year is fresh and new. “Every single lantern that is in the zoo currently is new,” said Mike Collins, the Event Operations Manager. “There’s not a single copy of any lantern from last year, so all 60 sets of lanterns are brand new.” The team has worked tirelessly since mid-October to ensure every aspect of the display is perfect for when the gates opened to visitors.

Plan Your Visit!

The Wild Lights display is officially open and will continue until January 12. If you’re looking to soak in the festive atmosphere, the zoo opens its gates daily at 5 p.m. and closes at 9 p.m.. And if that’s not exciting enough, you can even catch a glimpse of Santa Claus himself, who will be present every day up to December 23rd!

Join the Wild Celebration!

So gather the family, grab your coats, and get ready for an evening filled with dazzling lights and the spirit of conservation at the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. With every lantern telling a story of animal welfare and the enchanting display of lights, it’ll surely be a memorable experience for everyone. Don’t miss out on this beautiful blend of holiday cheer and awareness of our planet’s wonderful creatures!
