In a startling occurrence of events in South Carolina this September, as many as 21 juveniles are now facing charges linked to a series of school threats. The accused juveniles have allegedly been engaging in a wave of threats aimed at various educational institutions.
The threats originating from these students covered a total of 23 S.C. counties, reaching over 60 schools since the onset of the month. Social media platforms, as well as messaging apps, have primarily facilitated the circulation of these threats among pupils. SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) has taken a sturdy stance on this issue, emphasizing the severity of the matter and assuring serious charges against those involved in such illicit activities.
Upon catching wind of the disturbing threats, law enforcement swiftly sprung into action to ensure the safety of schools and identify those responsible for the threats. Owing to their diligent efforts, 21 juveniles are currently facing charges in relation to the threats spread throughout South Carolina schools. Last week saw a 12-year-old student from Berkeley County being charged based on a ‘shoot-up’ threat against a local middle school released through a social media post. The minor has since been charged with ‘student threats’ and ‘unlawful communication.’
SLED Chief Mark Keel has strongly condemned this behaviour, warning against the grave repercussions of such actions. “School threats are not a joke,” Keel proclaimed. “Law enforcement takes every threat seriously, and everyone needs to understand that there are serious consequences.”
SLED’s behavioral science unit has been summoned to assist in six separate school threat investigations, spanning six different counties. As a part of their ongoing campaign to quell such instances, SLED is collaborating closely with federal, local, and state authorities.
Any individuals with information concerning a school threat are urged to confide in local law enforcement or call 911 in case of emergencies.
