In the charming town of Lexington, South Carolina, local leaders are stepping up to protect some of the community’s most vulnerable citizens: the seniors. During a recent town council meeting, held on a sunny Monday evening, the council members took a significant step forward by supporting a resolution aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of seniors residing in care facilities.
The inspiration behind this powerful movement comes from a personal story that strikes at the heart of many families. Council member Darrell Hudson shared a gut-wrenching experience from 2019 when he lost his mother due to what he categorized as neglect at an assisted living facility. “This came to light to me when I lost my mom from neglect at an elderly care facility,” Hudson revealed during the meeting, his voice filled with emotion.
While visiting his mother’s assisted living facility, he unexpectedly found that she was missing. “She wasn’t in her room. Nobody knew where she was,” Hudson recounted, detailing the fear and uncertainty any parent’s child would feel in such a situation. Sadly, his search ended when he found his mother lying outside with a head injury, and to make matters worse, he learned that the facility lacked the necessary security measures—specifically, there were no cameras installed.
Overwhelmed by concern, Hudson took the bold step of addressing the issue head-on. He quickly realized that there were no existing laws mandating the installation of security cameras in care facilities. Determined not to let his mother’s fate be in vain, he played a pivotal role in advocating for a resolution in 2020, urging the state legislature to consider a bill that would require these essential safety features in nursing homes and senior care facilities across the state.
Fast forward four years, and Hudson is still lobbying for change. Despite various resolutions of support from several municipalities, including the City of Columbia and the Central Midlands Council of Governments, South Carolina still does not have a law requiring security cameras in these types of facilities. But Hudson’s determination remains unshaken. “As long as I’m breathing, I won’t give up on this legislation,” he declared passionately.
The Lexington Town Council recognized the urgency of this issue, and on Monday night, they made their stance crystal clear. They voted unanimously to support the resolution championed by Hudson, reaffirming their commitment to keeping seniors safe in their community. Laurin Barnes, the Communications Manager for the Town of Lexington, highlighted the council’s eagerness to back the cause. “When there’s an issue, we want to support the Central Midlands COG and getting the legislature’s support for it. And so, we’re on board with getting them what they need to make this happen,” she stated.
The collective effort from the Lexington council is part of a broader initiative to push for changes in legislation that prioritize the security and well-being of seniors. The hope is that by rallying support from various municipalities, they can finally convince state legislators to take the necessary action.
As these local leaders continue to unite in their commitment to safety, the message is clear: looking after our seniors is not just a responsibility; it’s a community effort. Lexington is stepping up for its senior citizens, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met.
As the town of Lexington proudly joins the fight, everyone is encouraged to pay attention to these vital discussions. After all, the well-being of the elderly deserves our utmost dedication and attention. Perhaps, with combined efforts and unyielding support, every senior care facility across South Carolina will soon be safeguarded by the protective eyes of security cameras, ensuring that nobody has to endure the heartache that can arise from neglect.
