COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a momentous turn of events on Tuesday night, Sen. Katrina Shealy conceded in the political battle for her seat representing South Carolina’s Senate District 23. The venue for this pivotal occurrence was Bubbas Pub N’ Grub, where Shealy made her concession speech, acknowledging the victory of her opponent, criminal prosecutor Carlisle Kennedy.
Sen. Shealy’s concession follows a closely-fought contest with Kennedy that was marked by high stakes and contentious debates. Shealy had the backing of U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, but it was not enough to secure another term in the Senate. Her departure signifies the loss of a veteran senator, leaving Lexington County residents with a freshman senator to represent them.
“Lexington County loses all of their seniority in the Senate, you know, that makes a big difference,” Shealy said while conceding the race. She went on to express her concerns about the potential impact of her loss on the district’s finances and the potential lack of representation in the Senate finance committee in the immediate future.
A key point of contention during the electoral campaign between the candidates was their respective stance on abortion. Although identified as pro-life, Shealy was against an almost total ban on abortion, particularly in instances relating to incest or rape. Such a stance was a significant point of discord with her opponent.
Less than 10,000 people in Lexington County cast their vote during the runoff elections, representing roughly a 5% voter turnout. Intriguingly, Shealy’s loss also signals the departure of the last standing Republican woman senator in South Carolina, leaving an all-male lineup.
Expressing gratitude for the trust reposed in him by the voters, Kennedy issued a victory message: “I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust you have placed in me by electing me as your next State Senator. This victory would not have been possible without the unwavering support of each and every one of you.” He further made a gracious acknowledgment of Sen. Shealy’s service and pledged to uphold conservative principles and ensure that the people’s voices are heard.
After a nail-biting evening, the election results were officially declared around 10 p.m., affirming Kennedy’s victory with over 60% of the vote. As Kennedy prepares to step into his new role, the people of Lexington County, South Carolina, wait to see what the future holds under fresh leadership.
