Lexington County Sheriff Candidate Faces Disqualification Over Residency Status

HERE NEWS

Lexington, SC – Garry Rozier, a candidate for the position of Lexington County Sheriff, has faced a setback as the South Carolina Republican Party has declined to certify him for the upcoming election, citing residency requirements under South Carolina state law.

Rozier revealed that he received a brief email from the SC Republican Party notifying him of the decision after he provided all the requested documentation regarding his place of residence and ownership of a property in Newberry County. “I own a house in Newberry County, but I have been residing in a rented home in the Chapin area for convenience in proximity to work and friends. I made this move well in advance of the election deadline,” Rozier clarified.

Despite submitting documents such as his driver’s license, voter registration card, and tax information showing his status on the Newberry County property, Rozier was still disqualified. If the decision stands, he will not be listed on the primary ballot scheduled for June 11th.

Resisting the Decision

Rozier has enlisted the expertise of well-known Lexington County Attorney Rich Bolen to file an injunction on his behalf. “Rich is highly knowledgeable about Republican politics in Lexington County and the state of South Carolina. We believe we can challenge and overturn this decision,” Rozier stated.

If Rozier is unable to reverse the disqualification, he intends to run as an Independent candidate against Sheriff Koon in the November elections. “This action appears to be a strategic political move,” Rozier remarked. “I owe it to my supporters, who have placed their trust in me, to continue the fight,” he added.

State Laws Governing Sheriff Candidacy

Rozier’s case sheds light on the stringent requirements outlined in state laws concerning eligibility to run for the sheriff’s office. The dispute over his residency status has sparked a legal battle that could impact his political future.
