Changes to Short-Term Rental Regulations Set to Begin in Lexington County on January 1, 2025

Changes Coming to Short-Term Rentals in Lexington County!

Lexington County, SC – Exciting news is on the horizon for residents and visitors alike! Starting January 1, 2025, Lexington County will roll out its new regulations on Short-Term Rentals. Buzz has been building after the County Council passed the ordinance last year due to rising concerns surrounding excessive garbage, parking woes, and rowdy late-night gatherings. Folks used to finding temporary lodging in our charming homes and apartments should be aware of these important changes.

What Exactly is a Short-Term Rental?

To put it simply, a Short-Term Rental is any place that offers one or more rooms in a residential building for rent. Think along the lines of Airbnb stays during those thrilling USC home games or quaint lake houses rented for blissful summer vacations. They can be rented out for a few days up to a month and must have a functional cooking area and bathroom facilities. These new rules specifically pertain to the unincorporated areas of Lexington County. If you’re in town or city limits, you’ll want to check with those municipalities for their own guidelines.

What’s Changing?

As of January 1, 2025, if you want to rent out your home or apartment, you’ll need a Zoning Permit. Don’t fret, though! It comes with a minor fee set by the county’s council. This small step can save you from potential hassles down the line. But there’s more! This ordinance lays out guidelines including:

  • The minimum age for booking a rental
  • Limits on the number of cars allowed on the property
  • Responsibilities of the host to keep renters informed of the rules

That’s right! If someone violates the provisions, permits can be revoked, meaning that the fun stops there. The host is on the hook to ensure guests are aware of the dos and don’ts.

How to Stay Informed

We know that navigating these new waters can be a bit daunting, but don’t worry! You can get up to speed with the necessary regulations by visiting the Short-Term Rental Guidelines you’ll need to scroll to page 121 for all the juicy details. Knowledge is power, right?

A Community Effort

This initiative is all about keeping our neighborhoods safe and enjoyable for both residents and visitors. After all, we want all who visit Lexington, including neighboring communities like Irmo, Chapin, and Lake Murray, to have a delightful experience. Whether you’re a first-time host or an experienced short-term rental owner, it’s crucial to stay updated and comply with these regulations.

As we gear up for the start of the new year and the changes ahead, it’s important for everyone to stay informed. Whether you’re renting or visiting, building community and respect for our shared space is key.
