Hey there, Columbia! Exciting news is buzzing around our beautiful state as we wrap up the first-ever no-exception early voting period in South Carolina! Can you believe it? In the lead-up to the 2024 General Election, more than 1.5 million ballots were cast, setting an incredible record for pre-election day voting in our state. That’s right, folks—this is the highest number we’ve ever seen!
Let’s rewind a little. Back in 2020, the state Legislature decided it was high time to make voting easier for everyone. They allowed people to vote absentee or in person without needing a specific excuse to vote early. Prior to this change, voters had to find a reason on a list if they wanted to cast their votes before Election Day. Oh, and let’s not forget the pandemic that kicked everything into high gear. During those challenging times, legislators made a temporary change allowing for wider access to voting.
But wait, there’s more! In May 2022, the lawmakers officially passed a bill that established a two-week early voting period. This move put South Carolina in line with the majority of states in the nation. Now, the only folks left in the dark are voters in Mississippi, Alabama, and New Hampshire, the only three states that still don’t offer early voting. Lucky us!
South Carolina is buzzing with excitement as Election Day approaches. Howie Knapp, the Executive Director of the State Election Commission, shared his thoughts on this record-breaking turnout. He said, “We are thrilled to see this record-breaking turnout during the early voting period as we head into a highly anticipated Election Day.” If you haven’t already cast your ballot, now’s the time to get to the polls!
So what do you need to know for Election Day? Polling places will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on November 5. Before you head out, officials encourage everyone to check out their sample ballot and polling place by visiting scVOTES.gov. Don’t forget—when checking in to vote, you’ll need to present a Photo ID.
If you’ve decided to vote absentee, keep in mind that your ballots must be returned by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. If you still have your absentee ballot, make sure to return it ASAP! To ensure your voice is heard, consider submitting it in person so it arrives before the deadline. And guess what? You’ll need to show that Photo ID again when you hand over your absentee ballot in person.
For those of you who might have questions about exceptions for military or overseas voters, or how an Immediate Family Member or an Authorized Representative can help you with your absentee ballot, check out scVOTES.gov for all the deets.
As South Carolina gears up for this remarkable election, let’s all make sure we are informed, prepared, and ready to cast those votes! Remember, every vote matters, and your voice deserves to be heard.
