Columbia, S.C. is gearing up for a spectacular event that locals and visitors alike eagerly anticipate every year—the South Carolina State Fair! This year, the fair is set to run from October 9 to 20, and there’s so much in store for everyone. The theme for 2024 is “46 Reasons to Celebrate South Carolina,” which is a wonderful nod to the 46 counties that make up our beautiful state.
The fair’s theme perfectly encapsulates what this annual event represents: the heart and soul of South Carolina. It’s a vibrant celebration of our history, culture, and the amazing people who call this state home. With over 90 food stands, it’s a paradise for food lovers! While you’ll find the usual favorites like foot-long corn dogs, elephant ears, and fried Oreos, this year introduces a delicious lineup of new treats. Imagine sipping on strawberry dragon fruit lemonade or devouring a poutine burger. There’s even peach cobbler funnel cakes and deep-fried golden Oreos! And for those with a sweet tooth, the Pro Kitchen Cookie Kitchen will be back with warm cookies, paired this time with hot or iced coffee from Oliver Gospel Mission.
But that’s not all! This year’s SC State Fair boasts an amazing lineup of nearly 70 rides suitable for fairgoers of all ages. From exhilarating sky-high adventures to classic family-friendly rides, there’s something for everyone! A great feature is the pay-one-price (POP) rides offered daily, allowing patrons to enjoy unlimited rides any one day during the fair. There’s also an option for a reloadable card with 90 ride tickets to be used on multiple days.
Entertainment is a big part of the fun at the fair! Get ready for daily shows at the CIRCUS at the Fair, live music on the Pepsi Place Stage and Academic Avenue Stage, plus roving entertainers who’ll keep the energy high throughout the grounds. Don’t miss out on fun historical demonstrations at Heritage Village too!
The State Fair is also a celebration of local talent. Visitors can enjoy a stunning variety of exhibits from local horticulturists, artisans, and artists. The Cantey Building will display beautiful flower exhibits, including a new South Carolina Native Plants and Design Contest. In the Moore Building, expect to see a host of creative crafts, quilting and baking entries, as well as new contests like the S.C. Dip Showdown and the Spirit of Carolina Award.
Deeply rooted in agriculture, the SC State Fair showcases South Carolina’s rich farming traditions. Get up-close with local produce displays, check out the S.C. Seed Art-iculture contest, and participate in interactive games that highlight farming and sustainability. Plus, enjoy daily showcases from McLeod Farms and check out the livestock exhibits featuring adorable farm animals. This year, there’s also a new Spirit of South Carolina youth horse costume contest and lively attractions like the Swifty Swine Racing Pigs.
The fair opens on October 9 at noon and will run until 8 p.m. on October 20. There are a few special days to note:
Parking at the fair costs $10 per vehicle. Don’t forget that children 5 and under get in free. Remember, the fair does operate under a clear bag policy, and there are updated event rules for youth entry after sunset. Moreover, the fair has given back over $5million to the community through scholarships and grants, further enhancing our state’s future.
Get ready to create lasting memories at the South Carolina State Fair this October! It’s the perfect opportunity to explore the tastes, sights, and sounds that make our state unique. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to join the fun and celebrate the many reasons to love South Carolina!
