Columbia, S.C. – New Teaching Fellowship Program Announced

Columbia College and Newberry College have been designated as co-hosts for the South Carolina Teaching Fellows program, according to a recent announcement. The program aims to attract talented high school seniors interested in pursuing teaching careers in South Carolina. The first cohort is set to commence in fall 2025, and it is managed by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention & Advancement.

Program Overview

This fellowship initiative is hosted by a total of 14 higher education institutions located throughout the state, with four being private colleges. The Teaching Fellows program is known for awarding fellowships to promising students who demonstrate strong academic performance, community involvement, and a passion for education.

According to Dr. Tracy West, the Dean of the Division of Education at Columbia College, “Teaching Fellows has been an important piece of educator preparation in the Division of Education at Columbia College, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to our students once again!” She added that the partnership with Newberry College will provide options for students to identify with either institution’s mascot, the Columbia College Koala or the Newberry Wolf, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and collaboration.

Award Details

Each year, the program offers up to 230 fellowships to eligible applicants, making a significant impact on the future teaching workforce in South Carolina. Selected fellows receive financial assistance totaling up to $24,000, distributed as $6,000 annually for up to four years. This financial support is intended to help them successfully complete their education.

Dr. Susan Fernandez, Dean of Education at Newberry College, expressed enthusiasm about the revival of the Teaching Fellows program at their institution. “We are thrilled that Teaching Fellows is back at Newberry College! The pinnacle piece of this program is our partnership with Columbia College. Both colleges are positioned to fully support fellows through experiential learning, specialized advisement and instruction, financial support, advocacy, and more,” she stated.

Application Process

Students interested in applying for the fall 2025 Teaching Fellows cohort can begin submitting their applications in September 2024. It is crucial for prospective fellows to apply during their senior year of high school to be considered for the program.

The Importance of Educator Preparation

Programs like the Teaching Fellows initiative are pivotal in addressing the need for qualified teachers in South Carolina. By providing financial aid and professional development opportunities, the program aims to not only recruit but also retain skilled educators who are committed to teaching in their home state.

As the education sector faces various challenges, initiatives that focus on attracting promising individuals to the profession are crucial for the sustainability and quality of education in South Carolina.
