On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the WaterSC team is hosting a listening session that’s sure to make waves in the community. So, if you have a few thoughts or concerns about the state’s water resources, this is your chance to dive right in!
Mark your calendars! The event will take place at the Phillips Market Center, located at 117 Ballard Court in West Columbia. Things kick off with an open house at 4 p.m., where you can mingle, meet fellow water enthusiasts, and learn a bit about what’s in store for our watery future. After the open house, from 6 p.m., it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: the public comment session. This is your opportunity to voice your thoughts on how to protect South Carolina’s precious water resources.
The exciting event is part of a greater initiative called WaterSC, which was born from an executive order issued by Governor Henry McMaster back in September 2024. The main goal? To create a state water plan that beautifully balances South Carolina’s economic needs with environmental sustainability. We’re talking long-term protection of our water resources—quite the important topic!
During the listening session, attendees will grapple with some big questions. How do we balance agricultural needs with environmental concerns? According to Governor McMaster, the demand for water resources is increasing as our economy grows and our population expands. It’s more important than ever to manage these precious resources wisely. The WaterSC working group is all about taking proactive steps, which includes creating a Stakeholder Engagement Plan to get input from all corners of the community by the end of October 2024. That plan will help shape how state water policies evolve going forward.
Also on the horizon, WaterSC plans to deliver a report to the General Assembly’s Surface Water Study Committee by January 31, 2025.
