Lexington is preparing to welcome its newest educational institution, South Lake Elementary School, on August 7, 2024. This upcoming school year marks an important milestone for Lexington County as the school opens its doors as the 18th elementary school in the Lexington District One area.
Located at 274 Bluefield Road, South Lake Elementary will help relieve overcrowding at nearby Carolina Springs and Saxe Gotha Elementary Schools. The new campus is expected to serve between 400 to 450 students spanning from Pre-K 4 to fifth grade for the 2024-2025 school year.
Leading the new school will be Principal Jennifer Stanley, an educator with more than 24 years of experience. Stanley, who previously served as the principal at Lake Murray Elementary School, expressed her enthusiasm during a recent school board meeting. “This school is phenomenal,” she stated, highlighting the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
The school’s mascot will be a Blue Heeler, a breed known for its intelligence and hardworking nature. Stanley believes these characteristics embody the spirit of the school, encouraging students to strive for independence and diligence. “Where dreams are unleashed” is the motto Stanley wants to instill in the students, aiming to cultivate a community where children can grow as communicators, collaborators, creators, and critical thinkers.
Stanley plans to establish a student-teacher program at South Lake Elementary, with the first cohort expected to participate by spring 2025. This initiative aims to ensure that in three years, every certified teacher will have a student teacher alongside them, fostering a supportive learning environment for future educators. Her focus is to equip these aspiring teachers with the knowledge of instructional frameworks, state standards, and curricula relevant to all Lexington One elementary schools.
Stanley’s vision extends beyond just academic learning. “My journey is to create a place where teachers can come and feel loved and supported,” she said, emphasizing the importance of a nurturing work environment for educators. By doing so, she hopes to create a vibrant educational atmosphere that ultimately reflects positively on the students.
The opening of South Lake Elementary School is set to significantly influence the Lexington education landscape. As it prepares to welcome students in August, the community can look forward to a new era of education that prioritizes student development, teacher support, and a commitment to excellence. With its promising leadership and clear vision, South Lake is poised to become a pillar of learning and growth for the Lexington community.
