The chaos began with a shooting and ended in a deadly crash, leaving multiple lives forever changed. Authorities are now investigating this heartbreaking situation as the community grapples with the urgent need for increased awareness around domestic violence.
Columbia, South Carolina, was the scene of a heartbreaking turn of events over the weekend that has left the community in shock. A police chase that initially began as a response to a domestic shooting turned deadly, resulting in the loss of a suspect, an innocent driver, and even a beloved pet.
The day started like any other for many residents. But around 11 a.m. on Saturday, chaos erupted at Cross Hill Apartments. A woman, who had been in a troubled relationship with 36-year-old Antavius J. Brown, found herself in a terrifying situation. Reports indicate that Brown, fueled by jealousy, accused the woman of cheating and launched a physical assault in front of their children. Disturbingly, as she made a desperate attempt to escape, he shot her in the leg.
Instead of seeking help, Brown made a chilling decision. He drove the injured woman to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, where his abusive behavior continued. He reportedly threatened harm to their children, who were left behind at the apartment. Authorities soon arrived and found a trail of blood leading back to the apartment, signaling the urgency of the situation.
After Brown fled the hospital—prompted by law enforcement’s arrival—police quickly tracked his phone location. Deputies attempted to pull him over, but Brown wasn’t ready to go down without a fight. Instead, he led them on a harrowing pursuit through the streets that he even streamed live on Facebook, indicating that he had a grim acceptance of what was about to happen.
The chase gained significant momentum, involving both the Richland County Sheriff’s deputies and the Columbia Police. The tension was palpable as Brown refused to halt, accelerating down the roads. The authorities were determined to stop him before more harm could come to anyone else.
Tragedy struck when the chase reached its climax at the intersection of Garners Ferry and Hazelwood roads. In a catastrophic maneuver, Brown crashed into a white Toyota 4Runner driven by 52-year-old Ryan B. Haman. Not only did the collision claim Haman’s life, but his furry companion also perished in the wreck. It wasn’t just a single vehicle involved; Brown’s reckless driving resulted in a collision with a third vehicle as well.
As the dust settled, it became evident that Brown had inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his stomach during the pandemonium. Authorities rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Meanwhile, the woman who had originally been shot is expected to survive, though the devastating impact of the events will leave lasting scars.
This tragic situation has ignited conversations in the community regarding the alarming rise in domestic violence incidents, especially during the holiday season. With the South Carolina Highway Patrol now conducting an investigation into the crash, many are left grappling with the senseless loss of life and the urgent need for awareness surrounding domestic violence.
As Columbia comes to terms with the aftermath of this harrowing incident, it is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for interventions in abusive relationships. The community stands together, hoping for healing, justice, and a future where such tragedies become a thing of the past.
