LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — On a quiet Thursday evening, tragedy struck on a roadway in Lexington County, leaving families and friends heartbroken. A 74-year-old man, Robert W. Barrs, lost his life after being struck not once, but three times on US 178, just three miles north of Pelion.
The incidents occurred around 7:17 p.m. on Thursday evening. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Barrs was walking along the road when the first vehicle, traveling west, collided with him. This vehicle did not stop, and the driver fled the scene.
Tragically, the situation worsened when a second vehicle heading east also struck Barrs before leaving the scene without stopping to check on him. Just moments later, a 2009 Chevrolet sedan, traveling east, hit him a third time. This sequence of collisions left Barrs in a critical condition.
Investigators from the Lexington County Coroner’s Office reviewed surveillance footage from the area and discovered a shocking statistic: more than 30 vehicles passed by Barrs after the initial impacts. It wasn’t until around 7:36 p.m., nearly 20 minutes after the first collision, that a passing driver finally stopped and called 911. Sadly, by the time help arrived, Barrs had already succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
This tragic event has left many in the Pelion community and beyond feeling shaken. The loss of a beloved local figure, who just recently celebrated his 74th birthday, has raised many questions about pedestrian safety and driver responsibility on busy roads.
Local residents have expressed their condolences to Barrs’ family, acknowledging the impact he had on their lives. It’s a reminder for all of us to be more vigilant while driving, especially on roads where pedestrians might be present. This heartbreaking story serves as a crucial reminder to always be aware of our surroundings when on the road.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. They are actively searching for the drivers responsible for the first two collisions. Anyone who may have witnessed the events or have any information relevant to the case is encouraged to come forward and assist with the investigation.
In the era of advanced technology, the lack of accountability displayed by these drivers who chose to leave the scene is particularly troubling. It’s vital that those in our communities look out for one another, especially the most vulnerable road users—pedestrians, children, and seniors like Mr. Barrs.
As we navigate our daily lives, let’s make a collective effort to prioritize road safety. Remember, every life counts, and showing compassion for others is essential for building a stronger, more caring community. Our thoughts are with Robert W. Barrs’ family and friends during this devastating time.
The Lexington County community is left mourning the loss of a devoted member. As the investigation continues, we hope for swift justice for Mr. Barrs and clarity for his loved ones.
