Exciting Changes Ahead for Bull Street in Columbia

Columbia – Once known for its eerie past as a site for an insane asylum, Bull Street is experiencing a major transformation that has the community buzzing with excitement! Various residential and commercial projects are rolling out in this formerly infamous district, with the aim of creating a vibrant mixed-use hub that can cater to the needs of locals and visitors alike.

A New Vision for Bull Street

At a recent Bull Street Committee meeting held on September 16, it was clear that significant progress is being made in revitalizing the area surrounding Segra Park. The committee discussed the development of several projects including commercial venues, residential complexes, and even office spaces that promise to make Bull Street a dynamic destination.

New Exciting Ventures

For instance, the Bull Street district will soon welcome its first gym, Pvolve, which is slated for the ground floor of the Bennet building along with Tupelo Honey Cafe, a charming Southern eatery. Both spots are aiming for a grand opening by early 2025. Additionally, coffee lovers will be thrilled to hear that Greenville-based Methodical Coffee is also looking to set up shop at the First Base Building.

But that’s not all! The newly opened Iron Hill Brewery restaurant and bar in 2023 has already attracted many patrons and increased attention on the growing commercial scene. Just steps away are Starbucks and the sporting goods store REI, making Bull Street a lively hub for both dining and shopping.

Grocery Store and More

During the committee meeting, City Councilman Tyler Bailey posed an important question about the possibility of a grocery store opening in the district. Project Manager Chandler Cox responded, “Long term, we would love for a grocery store to be here. It makes all the sense in the world.” However, no concrete plans have materialized just yet, and the same goes for the idea of having a hotel in the district.

To truly connect the Bull Street district with the overall downtown Columbia experience, both committee members and residents have voiced the need for improved biking and walking paths. With the number of wide roads separating Bull Street from downtown, better infrastructure could make a world of difference!

Residential Developments Flourishing

The residential aspect of Bull Street is also thriving. Currently, five residential projects are either completed or in progress with more than 3,500 residential units zoned in the district. About 800 units are either open or under construction, meaning there is plenty of room for future developments.

The Merrill Gardens senior living facility made a strong start in 2020 with its opening of 120 units, which are now fully occupied. Cox noted how popular the location has become with seniors, saying, “Seniors are the No. 1 purchaser of minor league baseball tickets!”

That’s not all; Midtown at Bull Street is currently under construction and will feature affordable housing with 90 rental units. There are also 18 townhomes anticipated to be available for leasing this year. Rent varies based on the tenant’s income, making it an inclusive option for many families.

Building a Medical Campus

Plus, there’s big news from the University of South Carolina, with plans to develop a new $300 million medical sciences campus on Bull Street. Set to replace the current medical facility at the VA campus, this massive project will serve as an educational powerhouse and is expected to open its doors by fall 2027.

Connecting Community and Commerce

As Bull Street evolves, so does the community’s excitement. With projects like the WestLawn building, which already features a bustling mix of office space and retail on the ground floor, it’s clear that Bull Street is on the path to becoming a lively and engaging place for all. Add to that the historic Babcock building housing 208 apartments, and the plans for a striking new venue to anchor the district, and you have a rich tapestry of opportunity blossoming in this once-maligned area.
