New Transitional Housing Facility for Young Women Coming to Columbia, S.C.

Exciting news is buzzing around Columbia, South Carolina! A new initiative is taking shape aimed at providing much-needed support for young women aged 17 to 22 who might be facing tough circumstances. The Mental Illness Recovery Center Inc., also known as Mirci, is stepping up to create their second Transitional Housing Facility in our vibrant community.

What is Millwood Place?

This facility, dubbed Millwood Place, will be a safe haven for young women seeking protection, healing, and a chance to rebuild their lives. President and CEO of the United Way of the Midlands, Sara Fawcett, expressed that the facility is designed to offer “a place for protection and for healing, and for helping them get some hope and self-sufficiency and stability.” It’s a heartwarming mission aimed at supporting those who need it the most.

Addressing a Critical Need

Why focus on young women? According to Fawcett, “A lot of times, these kids are coming out of very difficult home circumstances or they’re coming out of foster care. There’s not enough of a safety net once they are out.” This demographic often finds themselves at a critical point in their lives where the support they receive can mean everything. The program recognizes that these young ladies are in a particularly vulnerable age group that requires dedicated attention.

To ensure the program’s success, the goal at Millwood Place is all about “getting in early, intervening, and helping these young people develop the skills and knowledge they need to then be a sustaining member in our community.” Program leaders also emphasize that this initiative is about preventing long-term mental health issues stemming from the trauma of homelessness, as well as addressing the root causes of chronic homelessness.
