Columbia, South Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the University of South Carolina (USC) Marching Band prepares for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This November, the band is set to make its way to none other than New York City to participate in the famed Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. With a whopping 375 members on board, this event is more than just a parade; it’s a celebration of hard work and musical talent.
For many, an invitation to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is akin to winning a championship title. According to the Assistant Dean for Advancement at the USC School of Music, Audra Vaz, this is especially true for the USC band as it marks the first time in its 104-year history that they have received such an honor. “A chance to join this iconic parade is like the National Championship for marching bands,” she said. Popularly known as the largest student organization on campus, the band’s achievement naturally comes with a hefty price tag.
The overall cost for this exciting venture is estimated to be around $650,000. This includes expenses for transportation, housing, food, and other necessities for 400 people, which includes a mix of students and faculty supportive staff. Each student’s share amounts to roughly $1,500 for travel, room, and board. The costs are particularly steep as the band also has to prepare for a following performance at the Clemson game just two days after the parade.
Vaz explained, “The students will be on the road for an entire week.” Due to the nature of this special event, the expenses cannot be covered by the band’s usual budget, which is already allocated for typical performances. Of the students participating, only 20% are music majors, which emphasizes the broad commitment from the campus community to support this historic endeavor.
To help make this dream a reality, the band has turned to crowdfunding and community support. Currently, they have raised about 50% of their goal, and time is critical as they gear up for the big event. The fundraising page notes that they are currently 66% of the way to their target. Vaz highlighted that there are options for sponsorships, inviting individuals and businesses to consider joining in. With sponsorship opportunities come some truly exciting benefits, making it a fantastic way to support the band while getting involved in something meaningful.
As preparations continue, interest in the band’s journey is sure to grow, fostering a sense of communal pride within Columbia. From practice sessions filled with enthusiasm to plans for showcasing their musical talents in front of millions, the USC Marching Band is ready to shine. If you or anyone you know would like to lend a hand, Audra Vaz is encouraging everyone to reach out at audra.vaz@sc.edu for more information.
As Thanksgiving approaches, the spirit of giving and togetherness is palpable both within the band and the larger community. This moment represents not just a performance but an opportunity for everyone in Columbia to rally behind a local treasure. With continued support, the USC Marching Band is set to march triumphantly down the streets of New York, making history and memories that will last a lifetime.
