The opening game for the Lexington Sporting Club is scheduled on Sunday afternoon, signaling a new era for female soccer professionals in Lexington. The inaugural season of the USL Super League consists of eight teams, with further expansion anticipated in the subsequent years.
Lexington Sporting Club’s USL Super League Head Coach, Mike Dickey, expressed his visible excitement. He said, “The day of the game is highly thrilling for both the coach and the players. With our team in Lexington all prepared for the first, professional game, we can’t wait to compete“.
Sharing similar sentiments, MaryKate McGuire, a player with the new super league team, stated, “I’ve been signed with Lexington since January and it’s been a long time. The moment of reality, finally being here, brings us immense excitement to get things started“.
In their debut game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., Lexington SC will challenge Carolina Ascent FC at the American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. Following this road game, the team will return for their home debut at the brand-new Lexington Stadium on Sunday, September 8th at 4 p.m.
The USL Super League’s kickoff is observed as a monumental milestone in women’s professional soccer in the US. The league is set to follow the international “fall-to-summer” soccer calendar, differing from the men’s league that follows the traditional calendar year.
