Rainy Weather Ahead as Columbia Celebrates Veterans Day with Free Museum Admission

Rainy Day Forecast and Special Veterans Day Events in Columbia!

Columbia, get ready to grab your umbrellas! The weather is here to give you a bit of a soggy day, but don’t let that wash away your spirits. Early morning is set to greet us with patchy fog as we roll out of bed. For those of you planning to enjoy the outdoors today, brace yourselves for a steady rain moving in during the morning hours. With a solid 80% chance of rain, we expect rainfall to accumulate near a quarter of an inch, so it’s wise to dress accordingly!

What to Expect

As the day carries on, expect the showers to hang around through the afternoon. Thankfully, it’s going to be a warm one, with a high of 77°F. With a gentle breeze blowing in from the southeast at 5 to 10 mph, it’s just warm enough for us to enjoy a cozy day indoors. Plus, make sure to keep your eye on the sky! While the rain will taper off by the evening, we could see partly cloudy skies followed by more clouds overnight with a slight chance of a rain shower slipping in.

If you’re planning to venture out after the rain, tonight’s low will be around 64°F, perfect for a light jacket. The winds will settle down as they become light and variable, making it a tranquil night for all.

Honoring Our Heroes: Special Admission at the South Carolina State Museum

This weekend, Columbia has something special to offer our brave veterans and active-duty military members! In honor of Veterans Day, the South Carolina State Museum is excited to announce a weekend of free general admission on Saturday, November 9, and Sunday, November 10! Isn’t that fantastic?

Explore “Shared Sacrifice: SC in World War II” Exhibition

“Shared Sacrifice: SC in World War II”. You won’t want to miss this! This exhibition brings the powerful stories of South Carolina men and women who contributed to the war effort right to your fingertips. It even dives into how Black South Carolinians pursued a “Double Victory” against fascism abroad and segregation at home.

What Can You See?

Impressive displays feature historical artifacts, archival newsreels, striking photographs, and heartwarming oral histories. A few standout pieces include:

  • A uniform worn by Ernest Henderson, Sr. from Laurens, who trained the legendary Tuskegee airmen.
  • The flight helmet of Horace “Sally” Crouch, a navigator-bomber for the famous Doolittle Raiders.
  • A Red Cross Motor Corps uniform worn by Kate Montgomery Ward from Spartanburg.
  • A holiday card sent by Jack Williams from Pearl Harbor one day before the infamous attack that changed history.
  • A Naval Jack Flag that flew above U-505, a notable capture of World War II.

These artifacts are not just items; they tell the stories of courage, sacrifice, and heroism of our local community during one of history’s most significant conflicts. This weekend is a perfect opportunity to reflect and honor our veterans, so gather your friends and family and head to the museum!

And just a heads up, the museum will be closed on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day, so make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic event!

For more information, check the museum’s website. Stay dry today, Columbia, and if you see a veteran, be sure to thank them for their service!
