Pathway along the Columbia Vista Greenway with cyclists and trees

News Summary

Columbia is set to enhance the Vista Greenway with a significant $7 million expansion project. This initiative aims to improve accessibility between downtown areas, stretching from Lady Street to North Main Street, with a projected completion date by 2028. Local leaders emphasize the importance of the project for safety and connectivity, alongside additional bike lanes. Support in the community is strong, highlighting the commitment to a vibrant, accessible environment for residents and visitors alike.

Exciting Plans in Columbia: $7 Million Vista Greenway Expansion on the Horizon!

In a charming development for the residents and visitors of Columbia, major plans are underway to expand the Vista Greenway. This ambitious project comes with a price tag of a whopping $7 million and aims to significantly enhance access between downtown areas, including the buzzing BullStreet District.

Current State and Future Plans

As it stands, the Vista Greenway stretches from Lady Street all the way to Elmwood Avenue. But that’s just the beginning! Plans are already being made to stretch this beloved pathway to North Main Street, which will cost an estimated $3 million. This first extension is just the tip of the iceberg, as the next phase of the trail is anticipated to extend approximately 1.6 miles, running from North Main Street to Page Ellington Park nestled in BullStreet, costing about another $4 million.

This expansion is not just about making paths; it’s about building connections. Columbia’s director of engineering recently shared exciting details about the plan, which targets making the city more accessible, friendly, and safe for everyone who wants to explore the area.

Aiming for Completion by 2028

Though construction timelines can sometimes feel like a mystery, the city is aiming to complete this much-awaited greenway by 2028. This expansion will bring the total length of the greenway to a cozy approximately 3.75 miles, creating a safer and more enjoyable experience connecting downtown amenities that both locals and tourists appreciate.

The Vista Greenway made its debut back in 2012, starting from the Lincoln Street tunnel and finishing at the lovely Finlay Park. The greenway saw its first extension in 2016 to Elmwood Avenue, but it’s clear now that the connectivity has not reached its full potential. Currently, Finlay Park is undergoing some renovations and is expected to reopen in the fall, which will breathe new life into this area for all to enjoy!

The Community Rallies Behind the Project

Support for the greenway expansion is overwhelming, as local leaders stress its importance in connecting various parts of the city and enhancing the overall quality of life. The addition of new bike lanes on River Drive is already underway, further ensuring safety for cyclists. This is part of a broader vision set aside in the Walk, Bike Columbia Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan.

Adding to the excitement, a separate $150,000 donation will help fund a beautiful public art installation at the Lincoln Street Tunnel connecting to the Vista Greenway, adding flair and improving safety! This initiative is not just about transportation; it’s about creating a vibrant, visually pleasing environment everyone can cherish.

Connecting the Dots

The city’s dedication to building an interconnected greenway system reflects its commitment to improving everyday lives while promoting tourism. With other projects in the works, such as extending the Saluda Greenway and planning a new bridge over the Broad River, Columbia is truly on its way to becoming a model city of accessibility and convenience.

As Columbia continues to develop, locals and visitors can look forward to a city where parks, bike paths, and multi-purpose trails seamlessly link together, making every stroll, bike ride, or run an enjoyable adventure. The Vista Greenway expansion epitomizes this journey towards a greener, more connected, and friendly environment, ensuring that Columbia is a city that embraces its vibrant community spirit.
