Sponsor Our ArticlesRobbie Robinson, chef and owner of City Limits Barbeque in West Columbia, has been named a semifinalist for the 2025 James Beard Award in the Best Chef: Southeast category. This recognition marks his second consecutive year being nominated. The local community is rallying around him as he represents the culinary talent growing in the region. With a focus on Texas-style barbecue, City Limits Barbeque has gained national acclaim, further propelling West Columbia into the culinary spotlight.
West Columbia is buzzing with excitement as local culinary star Robbie Robinson, the mastermind behind the popular City Limits Barbeque, has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious 2025 James Beard Award in the Best Chef: Southeast category. This honor isn’t just a fluke; it marks the second consecutive year Robinson has earned this recognition, and the city is rallying around him with pride.
Robinson launched City Limits Barbeque in 2023 after spending over seven years serving up mouthwatering barbecue from his food truck. Located at 1119 Methodist Park Road, Robinson offers a taste of Texas-style barbecue, with items like brisket, pulled pork, and a variety of delicious sides. It’s worth noting that the restaurant is only open on weekends, making it a special treat for those craving some smoky goodness.
It’s safe to say that City Limits Barbeque has made quite an impression on the culinary scene. The restaurant earned national acclaim when it was selected as one of the top 50 restaurants of the year by a notable publication. This moment brought significant attention to West Columbia and showcased the incredible talent found in the area.
The James Beard Award is a significant milestone for the culinary world. Bill Ellen, the President and CEO of Experience Columbia, highlighted how important it is to spotlight the culinary talents in the region. For years, Columbia was largely absent from this celebrated list, but that changed dramatically just two years ago when three semifinalists emerged from the area. Now, Robbie Robinson represents the hope for the community that more culinary accolades may be on the horizon.
Interestingly, Robinson was also nominated last year in the same Best Chef: Southeast category, where he faced stiff competition from talented chefs, including the dynamic duo of Chefs Tyrone and Kitwanda “Kiki” Cyrus from Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles. The friendly camaraderie among chefs adds to the vibrant culinary environment that Columbia has cultivated.
As the excitement builds, the official nomination round will be announced on April 2, 2025, and winners will be revealed during a ceremony in Chi-town on June 16, 2025. Robinson has indicated that he plans to attend the ceremony and has already purchased a stylish tuxedo for the occasion!
South Carolina is shining bright this year, with two other local restaurants in Charleston—Chubby Fish nominated in the Outstanding Restaurant category and Graft Wine Shop in the Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category. This showcases the flourishing culinary talent throughout the state, underlining how diverse and vibrant the dining scene has become.
This year’s James Beard Awards celebrate 35 years of honoring exceptional talent in the culinary community, and with a team of anonymous judges evaluating the semifinalist restaurants over the coming weeks, the anticipation is palpable. Robinson’s recognition not only highlights his personal achievements but also puts South Carolina’s culinary scene on the map, showcasing its potential to rival some of the best in the country.
So, here’s to Robbie Robinson and his incredible barbecue! The community is rooting for him as the excitement for this year’s awards builds, reflecting the bright future of West Columbia’s culinary artistry. Who knows what delicious surprises are in store for us!
