With 29 mustangs already waiting for homes and 50 more arriving, animal lovers can meet these magnificent creatures and consider bringing one home. The adoption fee is set at just $125, making it a perfect opportunity for those wanting to bond with these living symbols of American history.
Get ready, West Columbia! From February 20 to February 24, 2025, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is bringing a delightful opportunity to meet some incredible four-legged friends right to the South Congaree Arena. This event is all about finding homes for wild horses and burros, and it promises to be an exciting time for animal lovers, families, and anyone inspired by these majestic creatures.
The adoption festivity will kick off each day at 8 a.m. and run until 4:30 p.m. except for Saturday, February 22, when activities will wrap up early at 12 p.m.. Mark your calendars, gather your loved ones, and swing by the arena to enjoy this unique experience.
Currently, there are 29 mustangs waiting eagerly for their forever homes, and to sweeten the deal, an additional 50 will be arriving just in time for the event on February 22! If you’ve ever thought about adopting a wild horse, now is the perfect opportunity to meet these beautiful animals up close and personal.
The cost to adopt a wild horse is remarkably affordable at just $125. How wonderful is that? This weekend will also mark the fifth exciting year of hosting this event, giving folks a chance to connect with pre-loved mustangs looking for companionship and care. Last year alone, 55 horses were adopted through an online auction even before the event kicked off, showcasing the bid for these majestic beings.
Wild horses and burros are not only remarkable animals but are also regarded as living symbols of American history. Though they’re not originally from the Americas, they play a significant role in the country’s culture and heritage. The BLM is committed to overseeing and managing the health of around 240 million acres of land across the U.S., particularly in the West, where these beautiful creatures graze and roam.
Did you know that mustangs can double their population every four years if left unmanaged? This rapid growth can lead to serious environmental strain. To help control the herd size, the BLM has introduced strategies such as darting mares with birth control methods. With approximately 60,000 wild horses currently in government custody, every adoption counts!
Thinking of bringing home a mustang? Potential adopters need to be at least 18 years old and must not have a record of animal abuse. You’ll need a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space with a sturdy 6-foot high fence to keep your new friend safe. Also, don’t forget to have food, water, and shelter ready for your horse. And here’s a tip: bring your own stock-type trailer because you’ll need it for transporting your new companion home!
To ensure the horses are being cared for properly, a mandatory wellness check takes place about eight months after adoption. If everything looks good, you’ll receive a sweet $1,000 incentive as well as the title to your mustang after ensuring their well-being.
While some might think wild horses are dangerous, with the right care and training, they can develop deep, loving connections with their guardians, proving to be affectionate and loyal companions. The BLM has been successful in matching over 300,000 wild horses and burros to loving homes since 1971, making this event part of a larger mission to bring these magnificent animals into safe, caring environments.
For those who can’t attend the event, there’s still a way to adopt a horse via the internet auction known as the “Online Corral”. Participants from all around the globe can bid on mustangs and burros, with some animals fetching incredible prices of up to $50,000 in far-off places like Germany.
So, whether you’re looking to adopt or just want to enjoy the heartwarming experience of seeing these horses, swing by South Congaree Arena from February 20 to 24, 2025. Let’s celebrate the wild spirit and historical significance of these wonderful animals together!
