There was a whole lot of wagging tails and playful barks echoing through Lexington this past Sunday as pet lovers and their furry friends gathered at the Icehouse Amphitheater for the annual Woofstock event. Hosted by the Humane Society of South Carolina, this fundraising bash was all about raising funds for vital programs that support animal welfare, including spaying and neutering, as well as caring for cases of cruelty and neglect.
“This event is incredibly important to our community,” shared Dawn Wilkinson, executive director of the Humane Society. “With the funds we raise, we can continue to run our spay and neuter program, support cruelty investigations, and operate our trap and release program for community cats.”
One of the highlights of the event was the community-driven trap and release program for cats. This initiative involves local volunteers working together to trap community cats, ensuring they are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and then returned where they were found with a little ear tip to mark that they are fixed. It’s all aimed at maintaining a healthy balance and preventing overpopulation. “It’s a community effort, and we’re so grateful for everyone involved,” added Wilkinson.
Woofstock was not just about the cause; it was a vibrant celebration filled with local vendors showcasing their products, refreshing beverages to quench the summer heat, live music keeping spirits high, and a renowned pet costume contest that truly stole the show! Adorable dogs in all sorts of imaginative costumes entertained everyone, and among the winners were a spectacular Little Red Riding Hood and her fluffy counterpart, the Big Bad Wolf.
One proud pet owner, Kara Blaisure, enthusiastically praised the event, stating, “We’ve always followed the Humane Society and the amazing work they’re doing for animals. We actually got our dog Yoshi from Pawmetto Lifeline, and we also have another dog we adopted through Columbia Animal Services. Supporting rescues is something that’s very close to our hearts.” This was the first time Blaisure attended Woofstock, and she couldn’t have been more pleased with the overall experience. “It’s a great event, and I’m so glad we came!”
This year marked the 10th anniversary of Woofstock, and the event had some wonderful surprises up its sleeve. During the fundraiser, three adorable dogs found their forever homes through the kindness of the local community and Lexington County Animal Services. Although the Humane Society of South Carolina does not operate a shelter, they partner with several local shelters across the state to help facilitate adoptions. It was heartwarming to witness the joy on the faces of both the new pet parents and the furry companions who were getting a second chance at happiness.
As the sun began to set over the amphitheater, participants found comfort in the knowledge that they were part of something special. With the positive energy buzzing around and the community coming together for a common cause, plans for the next Woofstock are already in the works, with the event set to return in the fall of 2025. So mark your calendars, folks – this is an event you won’t want to miss!
In the end, it’s all about coming together for our four-legged friends and showing them that they are truly loved by their communities. Woofstock is not just another event; it’s a heartfelt celebration that brings joy, awareness, and, most importantly, hope for the animals who need it the most.
