LEXINGTON, S.C. — This past Sunday was not just another ordinary afternoon in Lexington; it was a day filled with barking, laughter, and plenty of tail-wagging excitement! The Humane Society of South Carolina hosted its beloved annual fundraiser, “Woofstock,” at the vibrant Icehouse Amphitheater off Main Street. Pet owners and their furry friends came out in droves to participate in this fun event aimed at raising funds for some incredibly important programs.
The funds raised during Woofstock will be utilized for vital initiatives like the spay and neuter program, as well as the crucial department that deals with cruelty and neglect investigations. One of the standout features of this event is the trap and release program, where community members help in trapping stray cats, ensuring they receive vaccinations, are spayed or neutered, and are then treated humanely and returned safely to their locales. This effort is pivotal in controlling the stray cat population in the area.
“The community traps community cats and has them vaccinated, fixed, and ear-tipped before putting them back out in the community so they don’t repopulate,” explained Dawn Wilkinson, executive director of the Humane Society of South Carolina. Her passion for animal welfare shines through, and events like Woofstock allow community members to support these vital projects.
Woofstock was buzzing with exciting activities for both pets and humans alike! With local vendors sharing their unique wares, delicious beverages flowing, and enchanting live music filling the air, there was never a dull moment. One of the popular highlights was undoubtedly the pet costume contest, where adorable pets strutted their stuff in elaborate outfits. News19 caught up with some of the contest winners, who dressed their dogs as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. The creativity on display brought smiles to all attendees’ faces.
“We’ve always followed the Humane Society and what they’re doing for animals, and we actually got Yoshi from Pawmetto Lifeline, and we have another dog that we got from Columbia Animal Services,” shared pet owner Kara Blaisure. “So we’re fans of rescues, and that’s what we like to support. It’s my first year here, and it’s a great event.”
The event celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, showing how much it has grown and continued to rally community support. Attendees were not only there to enjoy the fun, but they also helped to facilitate the adoption process. This year, a heartwarming total of three dogs were adopted from Lexington County Animal Services during the event! Although the Humane Society does not operate its own shelter, it works hand-in-hand with local shelters throughout the state to help promote and facilitate adoptions, ensuring that more animals find their forever homes.
As the dust settles on this incredible day, animal lovers can mark their calendars for the next Woofstock event, set to take place in the fall of 2025. With an incredible turnout this year, it’s clear that Lexington’s commitment to animal welfare is stronger than ever. Whether you’re a pet owner or a lover of animals, Woofstock is a shining example of what a caring community can achieve together!
So here’s to more paw-sitive events in the future! Keep your furry friends close, and we can’t wait to see you all again at the next Woofstock!
