Governor Declares December as “Wreaths Across America Month”

This December, the spirit of remembrance is in the air as Governor Henry McMaster has officially proclaimed the month as “Wreaths Across America Month”. The proclamation celebrates a dedicated organization that honors our Veterans with special ceremonies, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made for our freedom. On Monday morning, local leaders Representatives Micah Caskey and Chris Wooten took a moment to present Carol Davis, the organization’s local coordinator, with this heartfelt proclamation.

A Monthly Meaningful Tribute

According to Davis, the importance of recognizing Veterans cannot be overstated. “It’s important for all of us to recognize and remember our Veterans and let them know that we care, and to remember those who have passed,” she stated. This month-long celebration brings an opportunity for individuals and families to pay their respects at Veteran cemeteries throughout South Carolina. The proclamation is a strong message that South Carolina truly loves her Veterans.

The Big Day: December 14th

Mark your calendars! On December 14th, a massive annual event takes place. Over two million volunteers across the nation will come together to lay beautiful wreaths by the gravesites of Veterans, ensuring no hero is forgotten on this special day.

Locally, in Columbia, the Fort Jackson National Cemetery will serve as one of the main sites for this admirable event. At exactly noon on December 14th, more than 13,000 wreaths will be placed at the tombstones of our brave servicemen and women. “And it’s important for us to come there. As individuals and families. And bring the children,” Davis emphasizes. It’s a significant moment to honor those that served and to teach the younger generation that freedom is not free.

Sponsoring a Wreath

Each wreath placed is the result of a $17 sponsorship through the organization. Representative Wooten mentioned that the Midlands community shines brightly with support, providing enough wreaths to cover every single gravesite at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. “I’ve been a part of the “Wreaths Across America” in Washington D.C. at Arlington, and to see the massive amounts of people show up to honor our Veterans is just incredible,” he stated. He is proud to witness such community spirit and patriotism at the local level here in South Carolina.

Join the Cause

The event is not just a personal experience for those attending but a communal show of respect. Wooten mentioned the honor it brings to see South Carolinians come together, stating, “It’s such an honor to be a part of that.” If you’re inspired to contribute or want to be part of this touching event, you can sponsor a wreath easily online at the Wreaths Across America website.

In Closing

As December gets underway, the call to honor our Veterans grows louder. This month, let’s reflect on their incredible sacrifices, and remember to show our appreciation. Gather your loved ones, bring your children, and join in on December 14th at Fort Jackson National Cemetery to lay wreaths for our heroes. Together, let’s ensure that the legacies of those who’ve served remain close to our hearts.
